In 2003, Peter Kriek and Ariaan Olieroock joined forces to become 16 Bit Lolitas and, after a few hectic years, succeeded in carving out a sound that is cool, sophisticated and embraces all that is good about House Music. Hot off their successful ‘ SÜPERMÅRKT ’album, the duo are back with their new double artist album, ‘Warung Brazil 2012’. Whereas the ‘Supermarkt’ album brought out their darker, more experimental side, ‘Warung Brazil 2012’ is all about the dance floor. We catch up with the boys to find out a bit more about the release…
How would you describe your sound on the whole?
It's hard because we don't really fall specifically in any genre. We use a bit of everything to create a sound that can go to many different places. The goal is to create music that stimulates people and brings a good positive energy; we've never really paid attention to styles that much. We go wherever we need to go to bring the tracks we want to bring.
And how would you describe the sound on this particular release?
We're very proud of this album, it’s our best work, it’s the dance music we would like to hear in clubs. As I said before, it's a bit of everything.
How does ‘Warung Brazil 2012’ compare to your previous album, ‘Supermarkt’?
Supermarkt turned out to be almost a concept album. It was as much an album to listen to as it was an album meant for clubs. We were also exploring some slightly darker themes at the time. We just follow the music wherever it takes us. And Supermarkt was an honest statement of where we were at the time. On the Warung album there is a different kind of energy - more open, more positive and more club friendly in many ways.
What’s the response been like so far?
Really good actually, it's opening a lot of doors for us. Can't complain at all!
Whatis it about Warung that’s so special to you?
As an artist, there is nothing more rewarding than finding an audience that really appreciates your music. It kind of shows that not everything you're doing is wrong. We definitely have a lot of fans in South America, and we're not ashamed that our music works really well in those countries where it’s warm and where there are lots of pretty girls, haha! But seriously they don't call Warung 'the Temple' for nothing! We should all be happy that such a place exists.
Would you say Brazil is one of your favourite places to DJ?
For sure, always love it over there.
Who/what has inspired you the most?
We love a great variety of music, but our deeper main inspiration I guess is to have the balls to follow your dreams, to make big sacrifices and not give up, to keep on pushing. So all those people that followed their dreams and fight for a better life for themselves and for others are our main inspiration.
How has this year been for you?
It's been a good year. At the end of 2011 we were a little bit like a ship lost at sea, but throughout 2012 we regained our focus, our passion and we're back stronger than ever!
What lies in store for 2013?
Well, a lot more music of course and a lot of cool gigs! We're not taking any breaks. We're also doing some production work on different projects outside the dance scene, which will be launched some time in the new year.
